The New Antenna Couldn't Save the Stream

11/24/2025

All, it is with great frustration that I am bringing down the online scanner feed for BuffScan. A recent late afternoon's police chase involving a carjacking originating in Cheektowaga was pure audio mush.

It has convinced me that without the ability to serve up a quality experience, there is no point to the overhead.

At this time I recommend either developing your interest in actual radio police scanning and pursuing it for as long it remains viable using traditional police scanning radios, or, subscribing to Broadcastify which, when ad-free, is a decent utility.

It's important to remind: The online scanner did not "define" BuffScan. The BuffScan project is about REPLACING police scanning and will thus remain a digital vehicle for promoting that concept and offering up a vision for such a world.

New Antenna for BuffScan Live Feed

11/15/2025

Today I installed a new high gain antenna which drastically improves the reception of Buffalo PD's P25 digital signals on the scanner I use for feed purposes. Entire conversations are heard now and with much more "umph".

Replacing the basic stick antenna that came with the scanner was my last ditch attempt at fixing things before simply ending the stream for lack of quality.

In this screen capture from the Win500 interface (the screen you see when you actually visit the feed) you can now see a steady train of BPD district radio traffic.

I was hoping that the new antenna would also just magically bring in Amherst police better too, but after what sounded like initial success, I realized that compared to the Broadcastify's Amherst PD feed which I monitored simultaneously to my scanner, I was still missing the majority of traffic for some reason. Even though the modulation from the traffic now being picked up through the scanner is a thousand times better than pre-antenna, consistency of traffic is still janky. There seems to be some way Amherst PD uses their P25 frequency on 424.300 that is different from whatever feed input the Broadcastify volunteer is using, which I suspect is some manner and mean of the SaiaNet network. I really don't get it. I seem to hear some transmissions that come out on the P25 424.300 frequency in the BuffScan scanner, that never comes out of the Broadcastify feed, and vice versa.

Therefore even though some Amherst traffic shows up in my little screen capture above, I will continue to omit Amherst PD from the feed and the feed will continue to focus on Buffalo City proper only.
